Sudden Understanding

Kenny about 54 years ago

Kenny, my son, fell off of a ladder last week. He was trimming the vines off of the house because it has a trellis type roof over the carport and the vines take over and have to be trimmed. It was time for the trimming. Those vines are like Jack’s bean stock. They go on the roof and wrap around the chimney and on the other side they try to reach the neighbor’s roof. They have beautiful purple flowers when they bloom so it is a beauty to behold but really a nuisance.
Anyway the ladder slipped and he had a great fall. He didn’t break bones so he didn’t go get medical treatment that day. By the next day the pain had set in and since Chris was at her job I took him to emergency. Our hospital is noted for it’s long waits in emergency so we decided he would call me when he got out. I had an errand to do so I left him. That time it only took them 20 minutes to send him home. I was nowhere to be found. He found another ride.
Today he called and wanted to go back to emergency because he was in unbearable pain. We were escorted to the bone room. All the other rooms were already filled. I knew it would probably be that way because on my way over there I saw an ambulance screeching toward the hospital and a fire truck going another direction with the sirens screaming. We waited and had plenty of time to catch up on all the latest family gossip and that sort of thing, we discussed all the stuff in the room. Crutches, bandages, and every medical thing you can think of. The nurse said they call it the Bone room. After 3 hours Chris came up and I left. He was getting X-rays at that point. He was there another hour. They discussed an MRI so I suppose there will be a lot of expense.
I own the house and a few years ago when I applied for insurance, the insurance company wouldn’t issue insurance until the vines were trimmed. I think it kind of ironic the first claim filed will be because of somebody climbing on a ladder trimming the vines.
They will probably kick me off of the insurance, maybe the cute little lizard will sell me some insurance.
Sudden Understanding

How Did It Happen?
" How did it happen"? the doctor asked the middle-aged farmhand as he set the man’s broken leg. "well, doc, 25 years ago…" "Never mind the past! Tell me how you broke your leg this morning." "Like I was saying…25 years ago, when I first started working on the farm, that night, right after I’d gone to bed, the farmer’s beautiful daughter came into my room. She asked me if there was anything I wanted. I said, "No, everything is fine." "Are you sure?" she asked. "I’m sure." I said. "Isn't there anything I can do for you???" she wanted to know.
"I reckon not," I replied.
"Excuse me," said the doctor, "What the hell does this story have to do with your broken leg?!?!?" "Well, this morning," the farmhand explained, "when it dawned on me what she meant, I fell off the roof!"

It is VERY ironic that your insurance company will probably deny your claim for an injury incurred trying to trim the vine they wanted trimmed in the first place.

Fall, especially off of a ladder, are not something to be messed around with. My father-in-law fell, hit his head, went to the hospital, even stayed a night, was declared okay, but over the next month seemed to grow more and more confused. He fell again and went to the hospital. Just as they were going to once again release him my sister-in-law arrived and demanded an MRI on his head. Lo and behold, there was bleeding on his brain that had been going on since the first fall. Had she not been forceful he probably would have had a stroke and died.

I hope they discover nothing serious with your son, but that they get to the root of his pain. What sort of vine is it?

It seems that they waste money with the X-rays and should take and MRI the first time, but if the X-ray finds the problem that saves money. If it doesn't and they need to take the MRI, then the cost is twice as much.

I hope he's ok. Seems you never get the good end of things when you try to do it yourself! Then again, I am a little more than accidednt prone...
