Famous Last Words

What’s up with all that texting? There seems to be some secret fascination about it that I fail to grasp. Everybody has a cell phone in their hand and while you are conversing with them they are texting.
My Grandson, Tylor (age 15) was over here the other evening and he is sitting on the couch and I thought we were having a normal conversation. I finally asked if he was texting while talking to me. He said, "I’m texting with two people, Grandma". Those same people can sit in the same room for thirty minutes and not say a half dozen words to each other.

Do they just like pressing the letters on the phone. Some do it while driving a car. So many are doing it that they had to pass a law making it illegal to text while driving. I decided to try it the other day to see if I could do it without getting addicted to it. So I typed a message to Deena, one of my granddaughters. It took me about 30 minutes to type out. "Wats up Doc? She answered back instantly, "Nuttin much". I couldn't think of anything else to say. I can assure you , I’ll never get addicted to it. I think it's a kid thing and will soon lose it's appeal.

Well, I don't know about addicting, but it certainly is useful. Even for us older folks. Say you're in a class/meeting and want to know what you need to pick up for dinner...text the wife. Waiting for someone to show for a meeting? text them to see if they'll be on line. Especially if you might be in a noisy environment or a very quiet environment.

I never used to text but now I have a phone with a keyboard and I can figure it out. Jim and I can talk all day and we can answer when we have time. I do think it is rude to text when you are talking to someone in person. I think it is here to stay.

I think it is rude To call someone or text while you are with someone out shopping or visiting or even in a car. My Granddaughter is so bad. When they outlaw this in Oklahoma she will have withdraws really bad. Why do you need to text unless it is so important that it can't wait until to get out of class? And yes it is addicting to the young people that is in school. They won't lay their phones down, there afraid they will miss a text when it comes in.

I text with my husband. He can't have the ringer on his phone or answer calls while at work so if I want him to stop and pick something up, etc. I text him. Before she started working days our texts might be our only waking contact for five days at a stretch, maybe more. When he worked nights it was also with rotating days off so there was no assurance he'd be off when I was.

Although I like texting, sometimes I feel like asking my one daughter-in-law if she couldn't just pick up the phone and call me. I, too, think it is rude to talk on the phone when you're talking to someone else, even if it's a cashier.

As to creating the messages, Lorrene, once you get the hang of it, it is easy, even without a regular typing type keyboard.
