More Ramblings

When I was a kid the only movie you saw was in a theater. Television wasn't here at that time. I would go to a movie on Saturday afternoon if I could beg a dime from my Dad. Before the movie began there would be a News announcement. They would announce things that were going on in other countries and I was fascinated with it. The news reel was as much fun as the movie.
The movies I saw were usually a cowboy movie as we called them at the time. Shoot em ups!
Guns blazing and men staggering out of the saloon, not because he was drunk but because he had just been shot. Talk about gun smoke, we have a killing every few days around here. There was even some talk about making backpacks for the school kids bulletproof. I think it was shot down (pun intended) as being a little ridiculous.
Chris and I went for a drive yesterday to see all the beautiful fall colors. Bright green trees with gold and orange trees scattered everywhere.
She took me to Wallyworld so I could buy some yarn. If I didn't know how to crochet or work a crossword puzzle I'd go all the way nuts. I'm only halfway there now. Quite frankly I don't give a hoot about movies. Who said 'Quite frankly I don't give a damn'?  I know someone said it!

The Past is Past

The awful things that happen during this time of our lives are terrible. I'm speaking of El Paso.
Those poor families have to wait forever to know if their family member has been shot or were they even there. Hospitals aren't expecting something so horrible to happen so they are understaffed.
How times have changed. When I was a kid we didn't know much if anything about what was happening.
We received a newspaper and I don't recall if it was daily or weekly. It was delivered by the mailman. We lived in the country, I'm not sure what happened in town. Most folks didn't have a radio.
I remember when the Pearl Harbor event happened, we didn't know anything about it until a friend who lived a couple miles away rode over on his horse to tell us about it because he knew our oldest brother was stationed there.
Now we have newspapers, radios, telephones, television, the internet, and the grapevine.

Zero Zilch

Now there is an egg recall. You take a chance with your life every time you eat something. Now they need to invent something to scan your food before you eat to find if it's safe. When there is a need someone will find a solution. People needed to know what kind of weather was coming so they found a way to do it. They had find a way to preserve food. I guess that's why we were born with brains. We sure wouldn't last long without them.
Since I started this we moved over into Tuesday in the Pacific Northwest.
I don't have any funny or any interesting things for this entry. My neighbors never venture outside.
I shall return!
My family early to mid 40's
One brother was not home. He was in Japan
fighting in the big war. My brother on the right had just returned from Hawaii. He was in the Air Force serving in Pearl Harbor   when it was bombed.

No News Today

Can you imagine turning on your TV in the morning and the Announcer says, Sorry, we have no news to report today; you may as well go back to bed. Or perhaps you could make your own news. So I did, I sold my Van.

I have an old Van 27 years old, but it runs very well, and the last mechanic that looked at it said it's in excellent condition for it's age.  I need to sell it because I didn't pass the vision part of the licensing renewal procedure. How to sell a car. What is it worth? Start high because they'll offer you less and if they offer me anything I'll grab it. So I set the price at $900.00 and I'll be lucky if I get $600.00. It also has a set of snow tires included.
Chris, my DIL (if they'd ever get married) just called and said she sold my Van for $900.00. I know the person she sold it to so I know it's true. He is going on a trip so it will be one week and asked for me to please not sell it while he is gone. It's hid in the garage so there is no danger of that. I don't have to figure out how many cylinders it has or how many miles to the gallon and no one will kick it's tires or any of that cruel stuff.
This is news.

The Good, Bad and Ugly

After you’ve been fat for a long time, and start losing weight, there is no greater feeling than baggy pants. It just does something for you! It makes your day!  The shirts start hanging off your shoulder and you look in the mirror and say, “Wow! I like this look.” It’s the reward for the accomplishment.
Oh well, on to more serious matters.  Today our newspaper reported that Yakima, our little city, is the fifth out of our nation for car thefts. I have no problem believing that one. I’ve had two family members that have had their cars stolen, and another with a motorcycle stolen . It happened a few years ago, but my son had his car (Honda, thieves favorite) stolen out of his driveway in the early hours of the morning. It was driven out on the highway and rolled and totally totaled. It also cost him towing charges. One of the men involved was hospitalized, but of course there was no restitution for the owner.
My granddaughter’s husband had his car stolen once several years ago. It was found later without too much damage. My great-grandson had his motorcycle stolen. It was found and some damage had been done to the wiring, but luckily they were not smart enough to get it started.
Oh well, on to more funnier matters.

Serves him right

Don't take your Doll to town.

You should know it’s going to be a bad day when you take your life-size doll to work for “show and tell”.  I’m guessing that’s why he had the doll in the passenger seat. He told the trooper, he was not using the doll as a fake passenger.
The following was in our Yakima Herald newspaper this morning.

Driver with doll passenger cuts off trooper.

Renton: Strapping a life-size doll into the passenger seat can be a high-risk strategy to gain access to a carpool lane.  It gets even riskier if you cut off a state trooper in traffic.
The Washington State Patrol said a trooper had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting a car that cut in front of him to enter the carpool lane during morning rush hour traffic on northbound Interstate 405 in the Renton area.
Capt. Rob Huss says when the trooper pulled the car over for an unsafe lane change he found that the front seat “passenger’ was an inflatable life-size doll wearing a sweatshirt.
The 21-year-old man behind the wheel assured the trooper that he was a good driver and not using the doll as a fake passenger. He still got a $248 ticket last Friday for a carpool lane violation and an unsafe lane change.

Time Marches On

Charles Lindbergh

I have just been sitting around thinking that when my knee gets on the mend I need to find some interesting things to do.  Other than house cleaning that is. House cleaning is something that really needs to be done. Just in case somebody drops in. If the house is clean you do not have to smile and bear it; you can smile and mean it.

I could join the Senior Center and take up something. I wonder what they do over there.
I am not necessarily inclined to volunteer for a job. I know somebody has to do it. Well, let somebody do it, I won’t stand in their way.
We hear a lot of complaining about how bad things are today compared to a few years back.  I guess it depends on how far back you want to go.  I remember when toilet paper was an outdated Sears Catalog. To go to the bathroom, meant a few yards out back to the little brown shack. It didn’t matter if there was three feet of snow. You had no choice. This was for the little kids as well as the older folk.
Another, not so fond, memory was the schoolhouse. Ours was located exactly one and a half mile from home. You had to hoof it because there was no yellow school bus. Again it didn’t matter if there was three feet of snow. Nobody had a cell phone so the parents could be called to let them know you made it okay. They knew you would be safe.

Recently a family finds their 10-month old baby missing from her crib and it is front-page news until another one happens. Back in 1932 a baby belonging to Charles and Anne Lindbergh was taken out of his crib and his body was found two months later. It made front-page news for years. Charles Lindbergh being a famous aviator was part of the reason it was talked about for so long. Famous aviator? do we still have famous aviators?
